Book #45: The Beyonders, A World Without Heroes

For the second half of the books in this reading challenge, there will be quite a few that I read for the book group of homeschooled teens that I am mentoring this year.  The Beyonders: A World Without Heroes by Brandon Mull is one of them.  When I met Brandon Mull at Life, the Universe and Everything Conference in February, I told him that I was going to have my book group read that series.  I told him that if he came to Portland in the fall, I would bring students to meet him.  I did both and it was awesome.  But the best part was how excited and enthusiastic my students were about the series.  It blew them away.  Only one or two kids had read it before and when we met to discuss it, most of them were caught up in the characters and action.  All fabulous, but I also wanted to talk about what it means to be a hero.  We talked about this quote from Galloran, the Blind King:

So many misconceptions surround the notion of heroism.  Far too many categorize a hero as a champion on the battlefield, a commander of legions, a master of rare talent or ability.  Granted, there have been heroes who fit those descriptions.  Bug many men of great evil as well.  Heed me.  A hero sacrifices for the greater good.  A hero is true to his or her conscience.  In short, heroism means doing the right thing regardless of the consequences.  Although any person could fit that description, very few do.  Choose this day to be one of them.

So powerful.  The whole series is powerful and inspiring.  And funny and action-packed and has amazing world-building.  Don’t get me wrong, I love the Fablehaven series, but I can return to the Beyonders series again and again and get something new out of it each time.  It’s a classic.
