Book #57: Scary Close

I can’t even remember why I requested this book from the library.  The author Donald Miller, wrote a book my oldest daughter liked called A Million Miles in a  Thousand Years, which I haven’t read yet.  Scary Close had a blurb that called out to me, so I gave it a try.  Compelling and painful, it was difficult for me to read, yet it ended up being beneficial.

Donald Miller tells the story of his failed relationships and his journey to gain authenticity.  That’s a super short summary, but it resonated with me.  I struggle with authenticity because I tend to be private and reserved, yet come across as extroverted and vocal to those I interact with.  So basically I look like I’m friendly and open, but I don’t reveal much about myself or be vulnerable.

If you’ve read Brené Brown at all you know what a hot mess that makes me.  I gots me all kinds of armor.  I like to look like I’m smart, capable, funny, and like I got it together.  I want people to admire me and come to me for help.  I’m being all kinds of vulnerable here to write all this down, but since it’s something I’ve been working on for well over a year, it no longer causes me heartburn to be honest about it.

Reading Scary Close was another positive step for me to find authenticity, and to process why I struggle with being genuine.  I couldn’t relate to everything Miller was sharing, but enough to feel uncomfortably spotlighted.  Now I’m better at looking inward during interactions with others and can examine whether or not I’m being authentic.  If not, I ask why and try to change.  It’s helping in all my relationships.
