Books #77, #78 and #79: A bunch of Paleo cookbooks

Yes, I read cookbooks cover-to-cover and yes, I’m going to count them toward my 100 book challenge.  So there.

Last spring, I got the chance to test recipes for Natalie Perry, food blogger at www.perrysplate.com and cookbook author of The Big Book of Paleo Slow Cooking published in 2017 and now The Big Book of Paleo Pressure Cooking, which just came out.  It was super fun to be part of the recipe testing process and I got more and more excited as it went along because I knew what goodies were going to be in her cookbook.  I’m a big Instant Pot fan, so any excuses to get more use out of mine were welcome.

Due to health reasons, I’ve switched over to a paleo diet to heal and repair.   Unfortunately, other than the vegan diet, paleo tends to be the most dogmatic and judgmental to those who don’t follow its precepts to exactness.  Because of that, I tend to gravitate toward cookbook authors and food bloggers who’ve chosen this eating style for health reasons, to reverse disease or manage chronic illness.  The authors who go paleo because of whatever science they’ve discovered to back up the diet don’t appeal to me as much.

What I like about Natalie Perry is that she’s not dogmatic.  She eats dairy and even grains on occasion.  Years ago when I first started reading her blog and using her recipes, she wrote a series of posts called Staying Whole in a Processed World.  It blew my mind, but I also thought she was crazy.  This was seven years ago, when people still thought that being gluten-free was a fad.  Fast forward a few years and I can’t ignore any more that I’m seriously sick, along with a few of my kids.  I start applying some of the principles I’ve read in The Elimination Diet by Tom Malterre, and realize that my diet has to change for me to save my health.

I have several cookbook authors who have helped me along on this journey.  Jennifer Robins’ book, Affordable Paleo Cooking With Your Instant Pot was the best money I spent on cookbooks this year.  I won a chili cook-off with her recipe and it’s a book I keep going back to over and over again.

For Jólabókaflóð, my husband got me a copy of The Zenbelly Cookbook: An Epicurean’s Guide to Paleo Cuisine by Simone Miller.  Oh man, this book is beautiful and amazing and it’ll totally up my game in the kitchen. I love convenience and ease, like Kelly Brozyna’s Easy Paleo Meals, but I also love the more challenging recipes like those of Danielle Walker.  Simone Miller is in the gourmet camp for sure and I’m excited to try out her recipes.  One book she mentions is The Flavor Bible by Karen Page that’s going on my to-read list.

Anyway, that was a big nerdy post.  But three more books for the challenge!

Goodreads rating: 4 stars across the board.  Some of the books I haven’t tried yet so I can’t vouch for the recipes, just the readability of the book.
