Book #80: Newt’s Emerald

For my final book of 2018, I decided to polish it off with one of my favorite authors, Garth Nix, and a book I’ve only read once before.  I’ve never been much of a fan of Regency-style books, like those of Georgette Heyer. I keep trying, but I can’t get into them. But if you have Garth Nix write it instead, toss in fantasy elements, and I’m sold.

Newt’s Emerald is about Truthful Newington, young heiress of the Newington estate and rightful future owner of the family jewel, the mysterious emerald that may or may not have magical properties.  Weather magic runs in the family, and Truthful is only a mediocre wielder of it.  When the emerald disappears, Truthful leaves her widower father and only mildly helpful cousins to find it herself.

All the trappings and frustrations of Victorian England abound. The book feels like a cross between The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud and your standard Regency romance.  I thought it was great fun to read, but nowhere near the awesomeness of Nix’s other books.   In all, a fun romp during the break.

Goodreads rating: 4 stars
